Living Generously Through the Funding the Mission Plan

For generations, Nazarenes have supported the World Evangelism Fund. Working together, we accomplish so much as the Body of Christ. Become a part of missions work and partner with the Church of the Nazarene to make Christlike disciples in the nations. In the Funding the Mission plan, the World Evangelism Fund is the vehicle through which we deliver the message of hope and your church drives that mission.

The Funding the Mission tool allows the local church to record income, track progress toward allocation goals, and make itemized online contributions. Not signed up yet? Contact your district office or email stewardship@nazarene.org.

What is Funding the Mission?

The Funding the Mission website is a dynamic tool that connects the local church to the global Church of the Nazarene as it brings life transformation through Jesus Christ.

Terms

The following terms are often used in understanding the current funding plan. Here are their definitions.

Just as disciples of Jesus are encouraged to set aside a portion of their income for ministries of their own local church, local churches are encouraged to support the work of the Church of the Nazarene both locally and globally. Each local church is committed to give proportionately to several causes that we value together, including the World Evangelism Fund, and perhaps a ministerial pension system (NBUSA) and regional college or university (EDU) in the US, and their local district. As the church raises funds to accomplish its mission, it is encouraged to share a percentage of those blessings with the vital mission of the entire church. This is the core of the Funding the Mission giving plan.

The most simple definition of what should be included in a church’s income is any charitable contribution to your church. Whether designated or un-designated, if the gift is charitable, it is usually considered to be church income. See this link below for guidelines on what is and what is not considered church income.

Charitable contributions are offerings for which the church provides a charitable giving receipt to the donor, and they are usually always included in church income. It is hoped that if a local church realizes significant revenue from alternative sources, that generosity would be expressed through mission giving.

Offerings in which a local church receives when the donor specifically includes a designation, many times for a specific mission offering or mission project.

A committee of a nine people who volunteer to serve the Board of General Superintendents. They include Nazarene district superintendents, ordained pastors, and lay leaders who are tasked to consider the requests of local churches for special exceptions made to the Funding the Mission plan. These exceptions are considered based on the circumstances, the local church’s giving patterns, and their history of denominational faithfulness. The guidelines used by this committee are set forth by the Board of General Superintendents. The committee reviews two different exceptions; a Rare Circumstance Adjustment and a Capital Stewardship Campaign. To learn more, see this link: https://nazarene.org/church-exceptions/
