Church of the Nazarene General Board member Angela Maria P. Barreto da vega Moreno was elected Board of Directors chair of the West and Central African Council for Agricultural Research and Development (CORAF).

She was elected during the CORAF General Assembly, held in the Dakar, Senegal, in April. This is the first time in 30 years a Cape Verde national has been elected to this position.

Moreno replaces Alioune Fall, general director of the Senegalese Institute for Agricultural Research, who stepped down after two terms.

“As an island country, this nomination is an acknowledgment of the actions that are being done in Cape Verde,” said Gisèle Dalmeida, representative of the private sector on CORAF’s Board of Directors. “This appointment will allow Cape Verde to further integrate into the activities of the continent.”

Moreno was elected to the position as part of the new strategic direction to make CORAF organizationally efficient and financially sustainable.

During the rest of the assembly, the CORAF Board worked toward a new strategic and operational plan which would open new opportunities to address climate change, youth employment, gender disparities, and food and nutrition challenges in the region.

Moreno is also president of the National Institute for Agricultural Research and Development in Cape Verde.
